This movie, which stars Tim Roth, Gary Oldman, and Richard Dreyfuss, is
a spoof of Hamlet, but it's more than just a silly movie that will make
you laugh. It's a silly movie that will make you think when you stop laughing
and try to catch your breath! If you haven't seen it, please go out and
rent it right away. No, really. Go ahead. I'll wait.
::humming to himself:: Hmmmm mm mmm hmmmm.
::now tapping foot::
::muttering to himself:: You'd think the video place is on the other side
of the world. Geez! How long is this gonna take?
Oh! There you are! I didn't see you. Uh, did you hear.... Oh, never mind. I'll just tell you a little more about the movie, okay?
First of all, you should know the story of Hamlet. For those of you who don't, follow this link to the Western Arts section of my site, where I have information on William Shakespeare. (And pay attention. There's going to be a test later!) ::laughing:: The people who actually did the required reading in high school can carry on reading this page.
Okay, let's get down to business. You know that R & G are Hamlet's friends and that they were summoned by the Queen and new King of Denmark to help determine what was wrong with Hamlet, who was fretting over revenge for his father's murder. In any production of Hamlet, the action generally revolves around Hamlet himself, unless it is temporarily centered on the Queen or King. In this movie, the same is true, although the cameras follow R & G all the time. That's to say, they don't accomplish much unless one of the main characters is nearby, dragging them through the action. This, in combination with the suspension of chance at the very beginning of the movie, is an argument for man's inability to escape his fate.
To relieve all the heavy and depressing thought, the movie is filled with one-liners and comical blundering. Gary Oldman is wonderful at playing a simpleton, and Tim Roth is even better at playing a simpleton who fancies himself a wise man. Throw in Richard Dreyfuss as the King of the Players, and you've got a wonderful movie! I promise you, it really is worth renting. It's worth buying, for goodness' sake! So that's enough dilly-dallying. Off with you. Either go rent this movie or buy it.
What are you waiting for? Go now!
